Jonathan Lawler was absolutely shocked when his son told him that he had a classmate that was hungry and did not have enough food at home. Lawler lives in the middle of Indiana farm country and found this unbelievable. Then he took a closer look.
He realized that the area he lived in was far away from grocery stores that sold healthy foods. As a farmer, he was able to grow some of what he needed and use the profit from the farm to buy everything else. For some families, even the drive to a grocery store was too much. So Lawler turned his farm into a faith-based food aid organization and started to donate what he grew to local food banks, soup kitchens, and food pantries. Why? Because in an area filled with farms, no one should be going hungry!
By taking this step, Lawler ensures his community is fed with healthy, locally grown food on top of reducing childhood hunger in the area.
John Whitaker of the Midwest Food Bank had this to say about Lawler’s organization:
“If everyone fed and helped their neighbors, most of the hunger problem would be solved.”
TRUTH!
