Growing your own vegetables allows you to enjoy healthy home-grown foods. It improves nutrition and also reduces your grocery bills. Here are 9 of the finest vegetables you can grow right at home.
Weather is getting warmer these days, but it might still be cold outside for most common vegetables. Thad’s why growing food in your indoor garden is excellent choice during this time of year. During spring, you can grow plants anywhere, indoors or outdoors, wherever you choose.
You may also get some plants started indoors, that you can plant out once weather permits.
Below are 9 vegetables you are able to grow anywhere at home, that are healthy, and could add variety very easily to your daily diet.
1. Tomatoes:
Tomatoes are my favorite because of their versatility. You can prepare literally dozens of delicious dishes, with them. And, they are packed with vitamins, antioxidants, and micronutrients that boost your immune system. Although you need a sunny spot, a well-drained pot and some organic fertilizers for good crops, tomatoes do well indoors. Tomatoes are tender plants and need constant care.
2. Eggplant:
These tender plants can be grown in many different ways. They are good in containers, hanging baskets, boxes, window sill and pots, but make sure you consider plenty of sunlight and space for these plants. Plants may need support as the eggplants grow larger.
3. Carrots:
Carrots are one of the healthiest nutrition packed vegetables, which is tasty and healthy at the same time. Just imagine how many different ways you can use carrots to prepare different dishes.
Get containers that are flat and deep that allow roots to grow deep.
4. Radishes:
Same as carrots, radishes can also be grown indoors. Round radishes or certain varieties of globe radishes do not need much soil to grow in. You can enjoy these roots within 25 days.
5. Potatoes:
Here is one of my favorites. Potatoes can be grown indoors in large containers, buckets, or even in boxes. Potatoes grow in groups and yield a sizable harvest.
6. Beans:
Dwarf French beans can be easily grown indoors in pots in early spring. These plants can grow up a string, cane, or wigwams. Harvest when the pods are green, young and juicy.
7. Beets:
Beets are excellent when eaten fresh in salads, cooked or pickled to make delicious dishes. They are thought to have cancer fighting traits, and many trainers recommend beetroot juices for building stamina.
Sow seed 1/2 inch deep and allow plenty of space between for nice large beetroots.
8. Lettuce:
Lettuce is much easier to grow than what you’d think. It doesn’t even need much space to grow but it’s incredibly healthy. The best thing about growing lettuce indoors is that it can be easily grown in containers and placed on a sunny window sill.
Many varieties allow you to cut just the lettuce leaves, not pull the entire plant, and the leaves will grow back for perpetual harvests.
9. Kale:
Kale is another awesome vegetable to grow indoors. It’s one of those superfoods that are easy to grow, and you can harvest leaves in any size. Kale can be grown in small pot. Just grab a medium sized pot, fill it up almost to the top, spread seeds in it and cover them with ½ inch potting soil.
Conclusion:
Just imagine the variety of healthy vegetables you are able to grow right at home. You don’t need to spend a whole lot of money or time with them, and you are going to save a ton of money on groceries.
Think about how much you’d be spending for organic vegetables at the supermarket…
Take good care of your plants. Water them regularly, monitor their growth, check their health and make sure they receive plenty of sunlight, but make sure they are not burned. They will also need to stay well drained; plants don’t like to stand in stagnant water. Some plants can be started with seeds, and some are easier with starter plants.
